Comments
Mooney drivers share a unique and deeply seated characteristic – they like to go fast!  Mooneys are among the most efficient and structurally sound airplanes manufactured.  The low profile cross-section and laminar flow wings reduce drag to enable the fast airspeeds typically unachievable in other manufacturers’ airplanes with similar horsepower.  The tubular steel frame, acting as a cockpit roll cage, along with the wingtip-to-wingtip wing spar make the Mooney airframe the strongest and safest among GA airplanes.

The M20E was basically an M20C with a 200 HP IO-360-A1A Lycoming engine.  Introduced in 1964, the Super 21 has always been loved by Mooney Drivers due to its higher performance over the M20C.  366 airplanes were produced in its first year exactly doubling the production of the M20C with only 183 airplanes produced.  A total of 1,264 M20E Super 21’s were produced from inception through 1967 and, for comparison, 989 M20C’s were produced through the same period.  Mooney’s specs reported top speed of 165 kts (190 mph) and cruise speeds of 150 -155 kts between 3,000 and 12,000 feet…and typical cruise speeds are 150-152 kts.

Production of the M20E Super 21 was suspended for 1968, but due to popular demand, the model was resurrected in 1969 as the M20E Chaparral.  Between 1969 and 1975, its last year of production, another 207 airplanes were produced.  For the same period, 270 M20C’s were produced.  In total, 1471 M20E’s were produced from 1964 through 1975 as compared to 1,259 of the M20C’s through the same period.

This M20E Super 21 has been upgraded with many of the 201 go-fast mods including a Southwest Texas 201 cowl, 201 sloped windshield, wing root, horizontal, dorsal fin, flap, rudder, & elevator hinge fairings plus flap & aileron gap seals and brake cylinder rotation.  The engine is strong with compressions ranging from 76 to 78.  The paint is excellent and the interior is nice.  The manual ‘Johnson Bar’ landing gear is favored by lots of Mooney pilots for its simplicity and ease of maintenance.  The GNS 430W, coupled to the S-TEC 30 autopilot with altitude hold and GPSS roll steering, reduces the workload of cross-country flights and improves safety for instrument approaches.  This airplane included the original option of factory-installed oxygen and it needs a bottle and clamps to restore it to full operability.  Come see and fly this airplane!  It is one of, if not ‘the’, best M20E’s flying today.  And, it’s a perfect entree into complex and fast cross-country airplanes!
