Mooneys are among the most efficient and structurally sound airplanes manufactured. The low profile cross-section and laminar flow wings reduce drag to enable the fast airspeeds typically unachievable in other manufacturers’ airplanes with similar horsepower. The tubular steel frame, acting as a cockpit roll cage, along with the wingtip-to-wingtip wing spar make the Mooney airframe the strongest and safest among GA airplanes.
The M20J, first introduced in July 1976 as the 1977 Model 201, included a variety of airframe enhancements engineered by Roy LoPresti that increased the top speed by 16 mph over the M20F model. The M20J, branded the 201 since it achieved 201 mph on only a 200 hp engine, was a significant milestone in Mooney’s history. In 1978, Mooney upgraded the engine from the IO-360-A1B6D to the IO-360-A3B6D and upgraded the power quadrant to the Push -Pull Power Controls. Both upgrades remained the standard throughout production. In 1979, Mooney moved away from the mechanically extended ventilation air scoop on the top of the cabin to the dorsal fin air scoop which reduced drag and increased ventilation. Mooney continued improving features and creature comforts in the “J” model until production ceased at the end of the 1998 production year. This airplane has a great IFR panel with the GTN 750, Aspen Evolution EFIS, and KFC 200 autopilot. The GDL 88 provides ADS-B in and out with weather and traffic displayed on the GTN 750! It ‘does’ need paint which provides the new owner with the flexibility to customize the paint scheme to their own design. As such, it is priced accordingly to allow for this upgrade. As with most of the airplanes we sell, Air-Mods just performed a comprehensive Mooney Service Center annual, the second annual we’ve performed. So the airplane is in great mechanical condition, the engine runs strong with normal compressions and oil consumption… and it flies great!
